Digc202 work (gaming review's)

So the trailer for Bioshock Infinite was released late last week and I thought I would offer my opinion, for one thing, I did not expect the next installment to be in a location that.. well wasnt under water. Thats what bioshock is known for, splicers, little sisters, big daddies, though the new video has a big daddy-ish looking thing, which looks more like it belongs in a Doctor Who episode, with the whole beating heart in a machine thing its sporting.
So the setting, okay I will admit a city of zeppelins does sound awesome, but to me it more seems like a scene which would be best used for an adaptation of one of Agatha Christie's murder stories. Just saying, Bioshock is known for the atmosphere, though Bioshock 2 was a tad more kid friendly than the original (meaning I did not sh*t myself whenever something jumped out at me.) But then in Bioshock 2 you're a big Daddy, what else is there to be afraid of? (apart from big sisters; a whole other kettle of fish.) And the magic chick? What was that about, I think the guy was either having a dream before falling to his death or he was trippin' on some serious acid.

Bioshock Infinite Trailer

But before passing such judgement I thought I would read the concept and story interview with Ken Levine. So the game is set in 1912, decades before the original Bioshock installation and instead of being art deco infinite has gone art nouveau. In terms of story, essentially its rapture but in the sky (built with high hopes to uphold man's highest ideals) but after a huge coup the city disappeared into the clouds, never to be seen again. A girl 'Elizabeth' has been held prisoner in a tower in the city for 15 years (since she was 5. Making her a potential love interest. On the side 'wtf'.) She may or may not be an A.I. ally further on in the game, but she is the one who has magic, by the way am I the only on that sees the correlation between this and Bioshock 2? Eleanor and this Elizabeth...
Bitching aside, it does look very pretty (very assassins creed 2), though I don't know what it shares with the first 2 Bioshocks bar for the name as there don't seem to be any hypos, splicers whereas they do have some new stuff that just doesn't seem to sit right in the Bioshock universe there are mechas and magic.
The game will be released in 2012 on Windows, Xbox360 and PS3

----------

Now I must admit I got a bit snobby when I bought Bioshock 2, I have a thing for collectors or limited editions of essentially anything, and when I found that the Bioshock 2 rapture edition included three posters featuring fictional advertisements from Rapture (all of which, when looked under a black light, reveal hidden messages) [22], the orchestral score from the game on CD, the orchestral score from the original BioShock on a vinyl 180g LP, and a hardbound, 164-page art book. It will all be packaged in a 13"x13" premium case with special art on both the slipcase and the box cover. Now I still havent pulled the poster out, but I didn't know about the black light thing until I just read it so, guess what I'm doing tonight? So, how to sum up Bioshock 2? An emotional walk in the park that isn't as frightening at times, but then has times that make you jump up and down screaming 'oh shit! she's coming and I have no amo and no eve! what do I do? what do I do?!?' - not that I shouted that, and not that my room mates filmed my reactions during the whole fight. (Apparently I lick my lips a shit load in a tough fight and literally bounce all over the couch.) Im getting a little off track. Essentially Bioshock 2 retains the atmosphere of Bioshock (without the shitting your pants whenever you enter a new area effect) there are a few tweaks here and there, but more than anything I found myself getting emotionally bound to the characters plight as the story progressed. I knew about the alternate endings and went for the happily ever after ending, where I got my revenge etc. But it wasn't as rewarding as the sad ending, a friend of mine had said they cried when they finished, so me being the self-destructive beast of a gamer that I am decided to replay the game. So yes, Bioshock 2, got 2 play throughs from me (it was that good.) (And yes I did cry like a bitch with the sad ending.) In terms of suspense, there is a lot of it, essentially when you choose to save or kill a little sister there is a chance that a big sister will spawn, and you know, they essentially screech and carry on while the music builds up, and they are pretty tough to kill (even though their concept and design are freakin' awesome.) As for the other Big Daddies, honestly they are push overs, and a means to find a little sister (and adam..the junkies!) The gameplay flows, cracking security systems is a lot easier (I hated that whole water pipe thing in the original for hacking) instead you have the needle which you have to make land on green to clear, or blue for a bonus. There are also some new plasmids which I had a fun time with. The first time I played through my primaries were fire, lightening and insect swarm, essentially throwing DoTs at everything that moved (weapon specialization=rivet gun). The second time through I chose Ice and hypnotize (weapon specialization=drill). And honestly I enjoyed the Ice and drill more, hypnotize a big daddy to keep splicers off your back and then freeze and drill into enemy. What can I say 'frostshock... anyone?' Overall a thoroughly enjoyable game, solid story and gameplay. Only thing that needed work was making it less kid friendly and adding some more hardcore atmosphere similar to the original Bioshock.

I know what your already thinking. Why does there need to be any review on portal? It should be compulsory to play it before entering any online gaming community (or any community at all.) Sadly however there are some sad souls who have been deprived of this amazing game. I'm not making excuses for them, they are falling behind and should catch up. Whats the point of existing online if you dont understand the concepts displayed in portal, there is none. Portal has gained cult status in the gaming community and is referred to throughout the online community. Anyway onto the game itself. As for gameplay portal is the ball that got hit out of the part, the game itself only takes an hour or so to complete, but the portal concept is an amazing one, relying on a physics engine I want to marry and a mecha I want in my home, the game is truly amazing. The graphics arent the same grade as the most recent releases, but they are still pretty decent without looking corny. The whole point of portal, the thing that makes it so unique is the concept of the portals themselves. In the game you are given a gun that can shoot 2 types of portals, essentially you shoot your own entrance and exits, you can also shoot a portal on a ceiling and then one under a robot sentry to watch it fall from the ceiling to its..death(?) mere moments after firing. And in that image below, yes you are looking at yourself through a portal. Either way its an amazing game, and as the digital nomad I presume you are it is integral that if you want to know about anything that is happening within a gaming community over the next year that you play this game (you can even get it for free through steam, and even after the sale ends, because of its success its staying under $20 AUD;  http://store.steampowered.com/search/?term=portal ; or..not that I'm mentioning that you should do it, but torrenting is a free way of receiving digital information nowadays)

This game looks amazing, not only does it incorporate the physics engine of the first but you get what looks like a mini GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) that follows you around.  And the companion cubes! Oh! The companion cubes! The trailer leads you through an area where the main computer (GLaDOS back from the dead?) has control over the lights and the mini GLaDOS (which I assume has gone renogade and is on your side for some reason) has a nice little conversation with you... well not really a conversation...it just talks at you, I can see this getting annoying, but as it seems generally humerous, I can more see myself quoting it a hell of a lot.

In terms of graphics, engines and general control of the game it exceeds expectations, its realistic, control looks as fluid as the first splice. ( gameplay preview;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMGQDJX4LJs&feature=player_embedded) . And in terms of story line you and 'Wheatley' (your mini GLaDOS) are attempting to escape the facility from first slice (your the same character from the first game, you've just been in stasis for a hundred years), so on the way out you and your orb accidentally wake up the real GLaDOS, who, seeing as you killed her now sees you as a threat, so she starts recreating the facility, and rather than have you as an unassuming test subject is purposely trying to kill you. The levels constantly move, due to GLaDOS rebuilding the facility, soem new portal concepts/technologies are introduced as well making it more complex, and less like a demo with cool features, and more like an actual game. So to sum up the storyline and amount of gameplay have been significantly increased which should make the game much more enjoyable. ( official trailer; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tax4e4hBBZc) On problem that has been brought up is the difficulty, most websites have repeatedly discussed how the advanced difficulty and puzzle solving needed for Portal 2 will far exceede the capacity of the casual gamer. Seeing as most people have emerged into the digital world through portal it is important to keep them in the loop, for many it was their first game, the first one that drew them over to the dark side! And while I will admit the last few levels of the last game were a little bit difficult, I can tell that portal 2 will require full immersion by the player i norder to use quick reflexes and mental capacity. (see game mechanics trailer:http://g4tv.com/videos/47109/Portal-2-E3-2010-Demo-Part-2-Excursion-Funnel/). In terms of the environment there is a very obvious change, the pictures I paired in this review show screen shots of a test room from first slice, followed by the concept for portal 2, this give us an idea of what 100 years and no GLaDOS has done to the facility.
'oh its you, how have you been? I ve been really busy being dead.. you know. after you murdered me!' Yes I love GLaDOS and even though she is an evil killing machine she can bunk in my room and we can eat cake and watch movies! And trusty companion cube will come!

So I don't know about you, but when I buy a game for $99, funnily enough, I expect that to be it, the complete story and all. But not anymore thanks to Xbox Live and the likes. The newest DLC (Downloadable Content) completes the story by letting you confront Morrigan, and thereby seal Dragon Age until the impending release of Dragon Age 2 mid next year. I hate to copy and paste, but the official release details can't really be summarized anymore than Bioware already has.

' The dreaded Archdemon has been slain and the advance of the darkspawn halted by a lone, heroic Grey Warden. The kingdom rejoices, but at least one question remains: what happened to Morrigan? The sorceress joined the Wardens cause, but it is said her true purpose was not revealed until the eve of the last battle. She vanished into the shadows, and while rumors claimed she crossed over the mountains into Orlais no trace of her path could be found. She was never heard from again... until now.'
Now the key features of this little piece of content are: the ability to Morrigan and conclude the Dragon Age Origins Story Line, earn new rewards to transfer into future Dragon Age games, and while your doing it you can transfer your character in from awakening, origins or create a new one.
So how much can you expect to be paying for this summary? About $7, which doesn't sound like much, but lets add up all the dragon age extra content shal we?
  • Blood Dragon Armor:  Cross compatible with next January’s Mass Effect 2 and offered for free with any retail purchase (expires on April 30th, 2010).
  • Stone Prisoner: Every new retail version of DA:O comes with a promotional code that can be redeemed to receive this DLC for free. The DLC contains Shale, a stone golem who has a rich story, extensive back story and his own quest arc. Along with the new companion, the DLC comes with new items, environments and hours of new gameplay that enriches the Dragon Age campaign. $15
  • Warden’s Keep: This DLC explores the lore of the Grey Wardens. Within this quest into the Grey Warden's past, the player can discover new items, talents, spells, and even a base that comes along with it a place to store items. $7
  • Golems of Amgarrak: Another stand alone side story that has the Warden venture into the Deep Roads to investigate the disappearances of an expedition of Dwarves. $5
  • Leliana's Song: Assume the role as the Bard Spy Leliana and uncover her own origin story and as to how she found herself in Ferelden. $7
  • Darkspawn Chronicles: An alternate ending scenario where you fight as, and command the Darkspawn during the siege of Denerim. $5
  • Dragon Age: Awakening (Im including this as an add-on because in spite of high scoring reviews it felt more like a glitchy, rushed add on) $50
  • Return to Ostagar: Your memories of the battle of Ostagar will haunt you for years to come. It laid waste to your order and claimed the lives of many great men and women. Now, there are rumors that a fellow survivor of the battle has escaped from captivity and is seeking the Grey Wardens' help. The time has come for the Grey Wardens to make their return to Ostagar and exact their revenge upon the darkspawn. $5
So not only are you paying the initial $90, but if you want the whole story you will be forking out $193 + $7 for the new DLC which makes an even $200 for a single game. Granted its an epic and awesome game, but it feels like they ripped out half a book and then offered to sell the other half after you'd really gotten into the story line, low blow Bioware, low blow!
UPDATE: Sorry, Bioware is about to bundle all the downloadable content which you can buy for $109 AU , but you still have to buy awakening, still seems a bit steep that the whole story line of the first game costs $159

So, bang for your buck! Which MMORPG is better and why would you want to play it, now Im not going to compare them or anything like that, just point out the features which make each MMORPG unique and the price tag attached. Now in case your reading this and are confused as to what an MMORPG, its an acronym for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. In these games you usually get a customizable avatar, which you level up to get new abilities and kit out as you see fit throughout your online experience. I've been playing various MMO's since I was able to do it without having my family ridicule me as a nerd (ah, the sensitive days, when I cared about that...memories...)
So lets start with the non subscription MMORPG, these are the games where the price you pay at the counter covers the entire online experience and no subscription fee's are required (pretty handy.) Now I'm a subscription type of gal who likes the constant updates so I went around to a friends house to make a new character, try out the starting area and take his avatars for a spin. This friend of mine is more the one off payment type of guy, so while he has most of the top selling non subscription MMO's I have most of the subscription MMO's (feel free to comment if I left any of your favoutites, or any that you havent tried out yourself out and I'l take them for a spin and add them into the post.)
Guild Wars; Now while I admit my exposure to guildwars is modest at best I still like the concept of merely buying the product off the shelf and that being it, I dont have to worry about monthy subscriptions. So the best features? A beautiful gameworld that is pretty realistic, no downtime for updates, smooth gameplay and heaps of RPG elements with a lush storyline. The only downside I saw to this ws that it was hard to find groups for lower level instances, but Im guessing that will not be the case for higher level characters.
Runescape (a classic); so as stated this game is a classic free to play online RPG, the visuals are lacking, but thats what you get for not paying a production team, overall the gameplay is solid and in my mind runescape was the forefather of RPG's. Even to WoW
D&D online; Fulfills the lore aspect, integrated voice chat which is easier to use then vent (but then vent is pretty easy.) Fats paced and literally rips you out of your seat and throws you into the fray. The downs? No PvP, not very suited for a single player exerience, doesn't really feel like an MMO even with the monthly fee, now for D&D online you should expect to pay around
FreeRealms; I know what your thinking, 'this is an MMORPG aimed at children' and it is, its boring and childish, yes! But it does have a large subscriber base. Its an enjoyable and varied experience.... Now that that is over with, please don't waste your time. It is aimed at children and feels like a mix of WoW without the ranting/gquit, but also without the depth, even WoW has superior graphics and they are pretty cartoon-ish, but overall this is a friendly little cuddly fluffy paradise for children, not for people over the age of 5!
Perfect World; but its not so perfect, while containing the aspects of a beautiful JRPG its still missing that decent oomf needed to get it off the ground, it felt like a mixture of old school nintendo64 graphics  with a bit of a decent story line but overall its lacking, if your after a free MMORPG from this you will be sorely dissapointed, just cough up the extra dough and get a decent game
Subscriber MMORPG's;
Warcraft (the godfather of MMO's); So I know I said Runescape was the forefaher, which makes it the forefather of the godfather. WoW set the stage for MMORPG, all others have been modelled after its huge success, and though present day WoW pales in comparison to vanilla, its all good. There are a few deserted areas, and even areas with a defeated purpose, Nagrand is deserted and if you want a buddy then you'll have to join a guild or die multiple times. It does get pretty repetitive, but the ability to que for instances makes it varied and fun enough to absorb your attention span for at least a few weeks. The cost? Pretty low for what you get, $14.99 a month, three months for $41.97 and 6 months for $77.94
LOTR Online; A little heard of MMO, the graphics arent anything to rave about but for diehard LOTR fans then its worth a play, the lore is very accurate and gameplay will keep you entertained for quite some time, so what about your back pocket, how much is it? Well that depends..monthly, quarterly, bi-annually, annually or a lifetime? $14.99 a month, $41.85 quarterly, $77.70 biannually, $143.40 annually, $299 a lifetime. Its cheaper if an ingame friend refers you or if you refer someone else, but only by a few dollars
AION; This one was a real WoW contendor, right up until the servers got crowded. Due to the high demand the game crumbled within the first month of this game, amazing graphics, complete control of customization and an amazing storyline right up until level 30 where everything becomes a korean grindfest.  So the majority of the levelling is fine, the flight system is a bit buggy, and if they changed the time limit reduced the cooldown and made either the whole world or most of the world flight worthy then it would be a much more enjoyable experience. Due to the lag as a Sorcerer (DPS) I got raped way to many times to count. The rifting system made PvP unfair in that the opposing faction would gank a persion who had literally just created their character. I hopped on recently and due to the mass rage quit that pretty much everyone did the gold sellers are down, not so many bots running around, servers have been merged and it seems to be shaping up to be a pretty fun MMO that could be the little sister of WoW. However the grinding elements still bug the crap out of me but its just so god damned pretty that I may be sucked back in. So how much for this pretty disaster of game mechanics? $14.99 a month, $41.87 per 3 month and $77.70 for 6 months and for 12 months $143.40. And quite simply for something that charges like WoW, it should perform like WoW (oh and the lack of security means you account can be hacked easily and the amount of bots and gold sellers can be overwhealming)
City of Heroes/Villains; Personally I love this (just had to choose between this and WoW) the character creation, ability options and costumes are extremely awesome as well as the story line, of course I went with a pyro villain and as such got to do such dastardly deed as set people, cars and other player's on fire. I must admit I loved the fact that my first interaction on this game was with an idiot, my mission was to rob a bank and kill an npc superhero. Suddenly this kid comes up and asks me why I'm being so mean, come on! A hero asking a villain why they are mean? So what did I do? I set him on fire, looted his corpse and ran off. I like a game with moral archetypes, there are RPG elements and the only real downs are that you rarely see a member of the opposing faction and when you see your own faction they are few and far between. Grouping isn't really an option, and the graphics arent the hottest, which sucks because it has the potential to be a really strong MMO. So how much? The same as AION surprisingly, but then they are run by the same company.
There are still plenty of MMO's that I havent played but are in gaming history, I've played a trial for most and either didnt have the cash or didnt want to spend the cash on the game, but based on popularity deserve to at least have a little mention down the bottom. ( Noteable others ; EVE online, Final Fantasy XI, Warhammer Online, Champions Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Age of Conan, Everquest) And of course the highly anticipated (coming soon) Star Wars: Old Republic

So I recently got my hands on a N64 for a weekend and I think it stole part of my life, or a whole weekend at least. Revisiting Majoras Mask and Ocarina of time, While I am not going to review them properly I do have this to say, go on eBay, buy a N64 and buy its games, play them with others that will appreciate them (you're looking at ages 20+ during 2010) and relax. While I did have my weekend stolen from me, I'm not regretting it wholly as I like to think of time playing retro games as an 'enlightening' experience. Either way, my very short review summary is 10/10, awesome, buy it, get an emulator and torrent it, but either way experience it.
That being said I think the reason I enjoy zelda so much is because I remember playing it as a kid thinking 'wow technology is so cool' while playing it on a chunky ass ctv. Compared to last weekend when I was thinking 'wow technology is so cool' while playing it on my HD flatscreen. What I'm trying to say is that it seems a lot more awesome if you're reminissing about it. A person who didn't grow up with a N64 (because their mean ass parents wouldn't let them have one) could either go over and play at a friend's house (happy time!) or go without gaming and become a sad reflection of the hopeless and imagination-less society we now inhabit (a bit extreme, but you get the picture, if you didn't get into retro gaming then you missed out!) So you either missed playing zelda or you were to young to play it, so say a 15-year-old downloads an emulator and plays zelda on their pc they then rant online about how 'shit' it is, not only would the internet beat the crap out of this kid, but it isn't his fault. He doesn't get the warm fuzzy feeling when playing old games because he wasnt playing them in A) The right setting or B) with previous knowledge of the game. So that concludes my super fun happy zelda, weekend sucking review and I will leave you with an awesome metal version of the 'song of storms'.

I know, I hate cat videos aswell, there are to many and after lol cats I think I may be allergic to the little buggers, but there are a few cat videos that are unmistakably the most viral things on the internet, and if you havent seen them yet, then damn! stop sitting at home being productive and get on the internet to help make things viral! Jeez! Letting the team down! Do everyone a favor, watch these, pass your judgement and then be considered part of the online community.
Just a sidenote; I dont hate cats, I dont think anyone can really hate them, I mean kittens are so damned cute, but at the same given I have two words which should make any sane person cringe 'lol cats'. There are certain viral videos that I will not be including, purely because its everywhere else, and thats the keyboard cat, a vital part of internet viral history, however shameful for the cat.

Seriously? Did twilight not destroy the concept of storylines and stereotypes already, now it has to move to video games? Now, I'm not your regular person who hates on twilight for no reason, I saw the movie and thought 'hey, maybe the director screwed it up, and this book actually has a deep and meaningful story line that I could get sucked into'
..................................
I was wrong, I have read the first two books in the twilight saga and think its preposterous, granted there have been sexual fantasies about vampires for thousands of years, but seriously? Marketing necrophilia to tweens and 'twilight mom's' (people over the age of 30 who like to replace their spouse with the -chokes- "ideal" Edward or Jacob)? However as horrible as the storyline is and as much as Stephanie Meyer (nicknamed Smeyer by her critics) deserves to be treated like Julius Caesar and stabbed repeatedly for slandering the written word and calling porn for teens a decent story with in-depth characters; no one can deny the success of the franchise... personally I thought adult shops were doing a good enough job, but they didn't have the pre-teen market.
~Okay enough slander, so whats the deal, is there going to be a video game? Well the BrainJunk Studios have recently bought out the right to make a video game and then there were rumours of a twilight MMO which was later abandoned, then Brainshack had this to say; 'the Twilight video game is in the very early stages of production, this will be a non commercial project, meant for everyone involved in the venture'
So what does this mean for die-hard fans? They will have to quell their gushy emotions for one thing (I know, I know. Enough slander already) But the game trailer itself won't be available until early next year, if you allow for the usually 2 year production time that it takes to make a decent video game then you can expect a 2013 release. What we do know about that game is that the player can choose to be a human, vampire (vegan or carnivore) or a werewolf. These characters will have unique facial customizations (so you can get the sparkle just right) and your character will be able to explore the world of Forks and Washington, and time travel, did I mention time travel? Because of course that fits in with the twilight series' linear plot (see what I did there.) But yes, you will be able to time travel back to unique moments in the 'story's' history. This suggests that the setting will be after Edward and Bella, with them being some unique legend that relates to some present day conundrum.
* Now for my input... Add zombies. Seriously! Think about it, time travel, werewolves and humans in small town U.S.A. add the zombies and you have a supernatural apocalypse, with the senseless gore probably invoking more of a story line than the Stephanie Meyer's entire written collection. And has anyone else noted that True blood and Twilight are extremely similar, as in the character roles are reversed and twilight is horrid, and yet Stephanie Meyer still continues to compare herself to Austin and Shakespeare.... ummm... Her pre teen erotic fictions are all about abstinance....yeah... totally better than Austin...douche
Oh and best Smeyer quote "I ... have take[en] on bigger issues than Vampire/Werewolf love to ... I don't have any incest, adultery, spousal abuse, mental disease, molestation, anorexia, suicide, cutting, etc. Which is why I won't ever get the Printz award either." ... No it's because your books are based on a pedophilia/necrophilia relationship. Boom! I win!
